PHENOMENA - DIR. DARIO ARGENTO

BACK TO SELECTION

Man this is a hell of a movie...

So because my previous access to horror movies was so limited, I had never heard of Dario Argento until within the past few weeks. I was just going through the collection of horror movies on Tubi and picking what looked interesting, which is how I ended up watching Suspiria, Phenomena, and Inferno. Enjoyed the first, kinda hated the last, and I absolutely adored Phenomena.

Honestly, one of the reasons I hadn't been interested in horror films was because I didn't find what I saw to be scary. Even now I can honestly say I don't think I have ever actually been scared by a horror movie. I had to learn to let that go, and instead I just started picking the things I thought looked or sounded the coolest- hence, this review. And holy shit, this seriously might be one of my favorites just considering how wack it is.

Short spoiler free summary: Jennifer Corvino, the daughter of a famous actor, is enrolled in a Swiss girls school, shortly after a girl nearby was murdered in what appears to be a string of murders targeting young girls. Jennifer, a sleepwalker, befriends an entemologist, John McGregor and his pet chimp, Inga. The two bond over their shared love of bugs and discuss the murders. Everything becomes rather urgent when it becomes clear that the killer is now specifically targeting Jennifer.

I find a lot of trouble finding what to say for films, specifically... oh well. This isn't some kind of formal review site. I'm not a writer. I better mention that this is actually the film that served as a huge inspiration for Clock Tower, which is all the more reason I have to review that too... I really like this movie! You should check it out. :)
